Looked like a tight contest between the two teams. WPH looking like they're going to be the grubbiest team in the comp again. Epping pulled their heads in for the second half and looked calm and composed throughout. WPH's late challenges reminded me of Kevin Muscat in his Victory days. Am looking forward to what these Epping kids are going to produce throughout the year.

Finding it difficult to understand how from this match we are making such an accusation. Both teams were equally as bad as each other on the late tackles. Epping have a bit to learn as a young team that you can't let the emotions get the better of them but agree that in the second half they composed themselves really well. They made 5 or 6 late challenges and then a similar challenge made from West Penno and the whole team wants to engage in afters. Can't be doing that. They stuck to football in that second half and were the better team in the end.
Second half particularly thought was tight and intense. It was quite end to end with the ball moving quite quickly through the middle. I think Epping will do better than Putney from last year. They have more cohesion and less chances of a bust up happening mid season. If they remain injury free, defs a shot of the Top 4.
good win for them against (no surprises here) the biggest twats of the league West Penno. Loved watching them lose. Going to be an interesting year, EEW beating West Ryde and Gilmour Cup winners Epping beating West Penno, plus Penno are looking good too with some key pickups. Gonna be a lot of teams challenging for the title.

I concur. Based off the opening round, this season is looking like its anyones for the taking. Will be interesting to see who holds the top four spots at the conclusion of the season. Must also say the EFC boys are looking fresh, fit and hungry for a spot in the finals. Is refreshing seeing a new team shake up the league a little bit.

Looks like they gave you a good right scare scoring first twice. Their ressies also didn't get pumped 8-0 like they did last year in Super League so maybe they have recruited a little....
Can come on here with an unbiased opinion for the WPH v Epp game.
Watched both grades, also watched the Macq vs Putney games (will get to that later).
Ressies - WPH v Epping. (1-1)
Epping didn't really provide much beside the goal they produced, a nice dink over the keeper, countering on a poor distribution. WPH hit the bar on a few occasions in the first and second half. They didn't take advantage of the chances they had, proving costly given the scoreline. I wouldn't read into this score too much for either side, Epping didn't look all that whilst WPH had some blunders in their backline.
First Grade - WPH v Epping (2-3)
The game started off very grubby, as I have read above. Epping were definitely the more physical team. First, taking out a WPH player who was through on goal (very lucky to not get a red card). Yellow cards followed after that. WPH seemed to respond with the same intent, also receiving quite a few yellows. It was a pretty physical affair but with some solid glimpses of good football from both teams. Could've been anyone's game in my opinion. I think if Epping's #40 is ever not available for them, they will not be looking a great side. Definitely their rolls royce, not sure they would've won the cup nor the game against WPH without him.

Accurate summary for first grade. Both teams could have easily gone down to 10 men as well. Couple of players on yellows getting final warnings for lunging challenges. Don't mind that tbh. Not a fan of refs who send off players for the sake of it; if there's the possibility of keeping 11v11, that's surely in the best interests of the game...
Agree though that the early challenge should have been a red. Wouldn't say it was a shocker but I don't think Epping would have had too many complaints if their CB got sent for last man. Not sure whether that caused the game to become grubby. It looked like Epping were a little too keen to get stuck in (maybe last week's win got in their heads??). From watching the highlights of the Cup Final on this place, didn't look like Epping played that grubby against Penno; in fact it was the opposite. So wonder what changed for them first game of the season?
West Penno's tackles looked more lazy as Epping played too quick for them through the middle for them to keep up. Saying that the last yellow from West Penno, No.40 was too quick for the defender and the defender took the opportunity to get in a good crunch. Call me old school but I love a good crunching tackle. If you're going to get a yellow, make sure you get em good. Mouyis and Wrighty would have licked their lips on that one. That was their speciality back in the day...
People on here complaining about the standard of Super League clubs coming through. Could it be that the quality of the existing stock has also deterioriated if HFC and Epping are making two Top 4 clubs over the last 10 years work their socks off. Should make the competition more competitive than what some initially thought...
