Interesting last few rounds, should be an interesting end to the regular season at both ends of the ladder.
WRR: Top for pretty much the whole season but have definatly stumbled. Losing 3 of their last 5 games has massively opened the door for West Penno and Tigers. Their run home is a tough one but with games agaisnt both 2nd and 3rd they could firmly shut that door with wins agasint them both. Anything less puts their title in real jeopardy!
WPH: Still in contention, would have been top dogs if it weren't for some uncharacteristic losses to Normo and Woodies. Have been given gift after gift from Rovers but can't seem to jump them on the ladder. It may come down to the 1v2 in a few weeks to decide this seasons Permiership. A lot of depth from a very strong ressies side might be the edge they need to claim yet another title.
EEW: Things have taken a turn for the worse for the Borinia boys. 4 games on the trot without a win sets them far behind the 8-ball and almost completely out of contention for top spot (barring a complete collapse from the teams above them) Shipping almost half their seasons goals against in the last month (13 out of 28) they will be hoping to turn things around quickly as there are a few teams making a late charge for finals that are hot on their heels.
PEN: One of the in-form teams at the moment. Like a rolling stone they started slow but have gathered momentum with big results against WRR and EEW recently. 8 games undefeated but still to play 2 of the 3 teams above them could see them either in contention for Premiers or drop out of finals completely.
STA: The Woodies are also enjoing a bit of a purple patch over the last month having dispatched both WPH and EEW in their last 2 games. Will being just 1 win outside a top 4 spot be motivation enough or will they run out of steam? They seem to have regained their traditionally "hard to break down" style of football this season having conceded the least goals in the comp (13) but also scoring the 2nd least so expect some gritty, low scoring games to round out the 2024 season.
MQD: Yet another mid table team closing the gap to the top 4! Recent wins agaisnt EEW and WRR as well as Pats and North Ryde have completely turned their season around. Previous to this their last win was way back in Round 3 in an 11 goal thriller agaisnt Normo. Something is defininately in the water at Waterloo but will they be able to continue the charge towards finals football? With games agaisnt the top 2 teams still to come only time will tell.
PUT: The wheels have fallen off a bit at Putney. They have discovered first hand that it's a long season and an early sprint may find you gased out towards the latter end of the season. Whatever the reason (injuries/holidays/etc) an amazing start to premier league has been followed up by an equally amazing drop off the pace. After being undefeated after the first 5 rounds they met the top 3 teams in consecutive games, shipped 13 goals in 3 games and seem to have lost a bit of their confident edge. They've since lost 7 of their last 8 games including an ego-bruising loss to North Ryde (giving them their first win of the year) Can they consolidate their season and limp into 2025 safe from the relegation scrap or will they drop further into the muck?
NHM: It's been a lackluster season from the Harris Road faithful thus far. Only showing glimpses of potential, they have fallen far short of their lofty goals for 2024. Lingering just above the relegation zone for most of this year, shipping the 3rd most goals in the league (very unlike them) and struggling to put consistent results on the board. Not really at any risk of dropping so will be looking to finish on a positive. With arguably one of the easiest runs home this should be doable.
STP: Now onto the relegation battle. Ironically starting with last years Grand Finalists. Equal least goals scored, 2nd most goals conceeded and with only 2 wins to their name STP currently sit as the team with the worst form with only 2 points from their last 5 games (although the 2 draws were against 2nd & 3rd). North Ryde recently closed the gap to just 3 points after their epic win against Putney which only puts more pressure on Pats to stay up.They have a slightly harder run home than North Ryde so their survival in the PL is at stake. Will they collapase abd hand another year to the Magdala boys or will they dig in and live to fight another day in prems?
NRS: It's been a tough year for the newcomers from start to (almost) finish. Seemingly full of young talent and potential but simply unable to find any joy. The harder, faster and more physical style of games when compared to what they found in SL has just been too much for them it seems. But the light at the end of the tunnel has been left for them by St Pats. Only 1 win from safety and having to play them in a few weeks time, the relegation battle might be decided by whoever wins that game. I think the task might be a little too much for them this year. Although I pity the poor SL teams who, more than likely, will feel the full frustration of a freshly relegated Gomez!
Saw North Ryde play for the first time last Saturday at Waterloo. They are a solid team with a good structure. The problem is this: apart from Gomez they have a whole bunch of 6/10 and 7/10 players with even a few 5/10s. The top teams have a bunch of 7/10s with four or so 9/10s
