Dragons for Relegation
wrote on 14-May-22 17:52

Thanks to the useless rain thought i'd get my sighting of this "mighty Dragons" team. More like mighty chockers. Dominated possession yet never looked like winning or scoring the big chances.

Don't think they should be out of the conversation for relegation.

Haha yeah I watched them gift 2 soft goals to woods today who otherwise looked toothless. Didn't realise it was charity round!

As another neutral observer, my thoughts for what it's worth. You can clearly see why dragons are supposed to be challenging for the title. They do try and play quality football which is refreshing from what has been on offer in recent years. At moments they looked a million bucks and at others they couldn't make the last pass stick or be clinical enough. I disagree with the first view that they never looked like scoring or winning the game. They hit the post several times in the second half and the Woodies goalkeeper made some huge saves. The goals Dragons actually scored were high quality. I have to agree with the second comment and say that yes Dragons basically gifted Woodies 2 goals. Champion teams don't shoot themselves in the foot in such a manner and if they do, they are able to come back and make amends. Though they tried, they weren't able to take their opportunities and make the most of their possession. They then fell for the sucker punch in the last minute. While unlucky, you have to be more secure in the last minutes of a game. Credit to Woodies, I don't think they're the dead force some are making out. Yes they were lucky in a game that even the Woodies supporters would say they were outplayed in, however good teams will take chances and capitalise on mistakes. This is exactly what they did. They have enough talent to avoid relegation (though I admit I haven't seen NER, PEN or RSU play this year). Those of us who have watched football for many years would call it the ultimate smash and grab from Woodies but really, they didn't have to smash and grab, rather, walk in and put a hand out. It was an enjoyable game to watch if not a polished performance from either team. Dragons will walk away confused and frustrated as to how they didn't win and Woodies will be proud of their scrapping and execution when presented rare opportunities. Not a Woodies ex player but nice to see a former power achieve some success in what appear to be barren times and also happy to see what I feel was a glimpse of what Dragons are capable of. My prediction is that Dragons will still be there at the pointy end if they stop self sabotaging and Woodies will be mid table. An enjoyable afternoon in summary. I hope those that were there feel this is an accurate summary though this is just my perspective.

have no feelings at all towards penno as a club, but please don't relegate them. The pitches in this association are already awful, we can't afford to lose our last Astro ground.

West Ryde have a good first squad, but little heart in the second half. Their ressies will be torn a new one in the makeup.
also number 19 needs a haircut and to reevaluate his life

Was a great back and forth game. Both teams could have easily scored 4 or 5 yet many chances were not taken, especially in the first half. Can see that individually and as teams both squads have quality in skill and tactics, unlike many of the other teams in the league.

Not sure about WPH's training situation, but having not trained for two weeks doesn't help with how heavy our (WRR's) legs got in that second half in the unexpected heat and on probably the largest pitch in the association (not an excuse for losing a bit of spirit in the second half, but definitely a factor).

The goals themselves were not amazingly worked in all honesty - there were definitely better sequences from both teams which did not end in goals - with us switching off 2 minutes into the second half to concede the first on a third man run and the second (maybe?) being offside, at least that was how it looked from where I was standing. Both goals from balls straight through the centre of the pitch catching the centre backs flat footed / out of position in transition.

On balance WRR can leave with heads held high after showing great determination for 80% of the match and with missed opportunities to capitalise on pressure and chances, and WPH can confidently say that they are favourites to win the league with the quality of their squad - I assume that most of your team have played NPL or were in that junior squad where they won champs of champs for several years.

Almost forgot to mention that WPH were playing without their star striker also (not sure of the reason) and still managed to win the game.

I would hope that a WPH player or spectator would agree with this 'review' in any case!

Agree

Agree, watched it from top of the hill, it was a good game and plenty of chances created by both sides.

WRR Def had best of chances in first half and played some good football. they have two guys up front who are quality and have good movement.

WPH looked very sluggish in first half, much better in second half, they controlled middle of park and took chances early when they came, ran over top of rovers as game went on, whether fitness, heat or Campbell size. I reckon second goal was offside but they did miss a sitter just before so probably evened out.

Having played againts both teams last year, WRR have improved and will make top 4 and WPH look like they are back to the team a few years ago with similar squad. Not sure where they played before but they have some very good young guys.

Good game and dont understand why Reserve grade didnt play, Campbell Park didnt look like it had any rain on it.
